what council is about?

The Allied Health Professions Council is the body established by an Act of Parliament (Act 857, 2013) to regulate the training and practice of Allied Health Professions in Ghana. As part of its mandate, the Council is responsible for granting Professional Accreditation for all Allied Health Programmes.

Functions of the council

Regulate the standard of services for the practice of allied health professions;
Ensure that the standard of study and training in recognised institution in maintained;
Set practice standards of proficiency and conduct for allied health professionals;

Monitor and inspect allied health facilities in collaboration with the health facilities regulatory agency;
Facilitate continuing professional development of practitioners;
Determine, in consultation with the appropriate educational institutions, courses of instruction and practical training for allied health professionals;
Determine and implement post registration continuing education and continuing professionals’ development programmes for practitioners; Ensure that the education and training of allied health practitioners and other allied health care providers are carried out at approved educational institutions;
Advise the Minister on matters relating to allied health practice; Conduct licensing examination for the registration of allied health professionals;
Perform any other functions that are ancillary to the object of the Council.

What we Do

Regulate the standard of services for the practice of allied health professions;

Provisional Registration

This type of registration is for newly qualified practitioners in order for them to practice during internship/national service. A provisional registration is valid for a period of one year. A person who registers provisionally shall have obtained the requisite qualification and satisfied the other conditions determined by the Board.

Permanent Registration

This registration is done for practitioners who intend to practice permanently in the country. A professional may apply for permanent registration after practising for one year with provisional registration and has been successful in the licensure examination organised by the council. In the case of foreign trained professional, a person may be subjected to either the licensure exams or interview. A permanent registration is valid for the calendar year in which it was registered and shall be renewed before 31st December for the following calendar year.

Pin Renewal

A permanent registered professional is expected to renew his/her PIN before 31st December 31st December for the following calendar year. Failure on the part of a professional to renew automatically makes it an expired pin which cannot be used to practice as a professional.

Annual list of allied health professions: The registrar shall publish the list of allied health professionals’ specifics in the Gazette by 31st of January each year.

Licensure Examination

Candidates must apply through the Allied Health Professions Council (AHPC) Ghana portal.

Required documents may include academic transcripts, certificates, and proof of internship or clinical practice.

Indexing

The Allied Health Professions Council (AHPC) Ghana indexing is the process by which allied health students are officially registered with the Council before they complete their studies. It is a mandatory requirement for students pursuing allied health programs in accredited institutions in Ghana.

Official Recognition – Ensures that students are recognized as eligible trainees in an accredited allied health training institution.
Regulatory Tracking – Allows the AHPC to track students from admission to graduation.

Accreditation

The Council is required by law to regulate the training and practice of Allied Health Professionals as captured in the schedule of the Health Professions Regulatory Bodies Act, 2013 (Act 857) Part One.
Training Institutions seeking to run Allied Health Programmes shall be required to officially write to the Council and provide the following information:
• Name of Training Institution
• Profile of institution
• Proposed programme and level

The Institution shall acquire the accreditation guidelines from the Council after a review of the application.
The programme accreditation guideline will assist institutions seeking accreditation to submit the required information to the Council.
The institution shall submit four (4) copies of the curriculum and other supporting documents to the Council for assessment.

Foreign Trained Registration

Foreign-trained Allied Health Professionals are required by the law establishing the Council to register before they are allowed to practice in the country.
Foreign-trained professionals shall present a primary qualification acceptable to the Board of the Council.
Applicants in this category are required to present scanned copies of their transcripts and certificates to the Council via email to support@ahpc.gov.gh for a pre-assessment test.
Qualified applicants after pre-assessment shall receive a softcopy of the registration forms.
Successful applicants will be expected to fill the form, pay the required fee, and present the forms to the Council for the registration process to commence.
Applicants who fail the pre-assessment test shall be denied registration and hence will not receive the registration forms

The Council shall, as part of its quality control, verify all documents presented for registration. The Council reserves the right to discontinue the registration process until all responses to verification requests are received.
Successful applicants shall undergo an interview organized by the Council.
Depending on the outcome of the interview, an applicant may go through one of the following
• Outright issuance of a license
• Pass the Council licensure examination before the issuance of the license
• Undertake internship and pass the Council’s licensure examination before issuance of the license
Foreign-trained non-Ghanaians, in addition to the above requirements, must show evidence of a work permit before they are issued their permanent license.Credential Verification
All requests for credential verification of Allied Health Professionals should be addressed to the Registrar via email support@ahpc.gov.gh and must include the following:
• Name of professional
• Professional’s registration PIN
• Programme of study
• Scan copy of License

CPD

The Council is required by law to determine and facilitate the organization of CPD programmes for Professionals to attend and update their skills.
Allied Health professionals must show evidence of CPD points before they are allowed to renew their PINs for the ensuing year. The following are the CPD requirements for each cadre.
• Degree and Above – a minimum of 20 points
• Diploma – a minimum 15 points
• Certificates- a minimum of 10

CPD Accreditation Process
Institutions or organizations, and professional bodies seeking to run Continuing Professional Development (CPD) programmes shall officially notify the Council for authorization. The following documents must accompany the request:
• Business Registration Certificates
• Company Profile
• CVs of Proposed CPD facilitators
• Source of Funding
The Council will review and accredit CPD programmes and award the respective points to the accredited organization to ensure quality control. Internship/Nss

The Council, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and the National Service Secretariat, shall organize mandatory Internship programmes (National Service).

The Council shall only accept graduates from accredited institutions for the Internship/NSS programme. Interns shall be posted to facilities where there is a Senior Officer to supervise the Internship/NSS programme.

Interns shall be provided with Clinical Internship Logbooks to ensure that they cover specific procedures at the facility level. They shall be issued with provisional certificates to enable them to enter the facility for the Internship/NSS programme.

The Council shall carry out periodic monitoring to ensure that interns are on duty and are receiving the required supervision.

The mandatory Internship/NSS programme is a prerequisite for the Council’s Licensure Examination. Interns who do not complete their Internship/NSS shall not be allowed to sit for the Council’s license examination.
